Attention Estate Sale Shoppers,

Heritage Estate Sales is proud to present an estate from avid collectors and frequent shoppers at local auction houses. Their discerning eye for unique and interesting collectibles is apparent when you walk through their immaculately clean home. This Northridge estate is packed! Beautiful antiques, artwork, vintage toys and electronics are just the beginning and the owners keep adding more posters and memorabilia. There’s an extremely rare Toby Bluth collection of original paintings that have never before been offered for sale. Below is a description of these rare works and a bio on the artist from owner of the estate:

Cole Porter & “Anything Goes” by Toby Bluth

Toby Bluth (1940-2013) is best remembered as a quintessential Disney artist. He worked as an animator and a director on numerous animated Disney films, and throughout his career created original watercolor paintings of scenes from famous Disney movies, his favorites being the first five films the studio produced (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi). He also had a keen interest in Betty Boop and her entourage, as well as Popeye and his gang, and created numerous paintings based on all of them.

Toby was also an accomplished writer, director, designer and actor in musical theater, having performed and/or directed in nearly one hundred musicals, both on Broadway and beyond. Given his multiple talents and interests, it’s no wonder that he had a dream to produce and direct an animated feature film based on Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes”, using Popeye, Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy, and Pudgy (Betty Boop’s dog) as the main characters in the movie.

To help others visualize his dream, Toby created 5 original watercolor paintings, each showcasing how one of these well-known animated characters would portray one of the people in the movie:(1) Popeye as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, (2) Olive Oyl as “Reno Sweeny”, (3) Bluto as the “Captain”, (5) Wimpy as the “First Mate”, and (5) Pudgy as “Moon Mullins”. Toby showed them to the representatives of Cole Porter’s estate and made an impassioned pitch for the animated version of the musical. Because one of the trustees simply couldn’t imagine the play as an animated feature film, the project never got off the ground.

As his close friend and manager for many years, Toby gave these unique paintings to me as a gift. Each image is 10” x 14”, signed and displayed in matching museum–quality frames (18” x 22”). So this is rare one-of-a-kind artwork, with an unusual provenance, that has never been reproduced in signed limited editions.

There is also an original watercolor painting of Moon Mullins, not based on any well-known animation character, signed by Toby and framed that is available for purchase.

In addition to the “Anything Goes” suite, I have an original watercolor painting by Toby featuring “Coco the Clown”, which is signed and framed. It, too, is available for purchase.
